Ambassador Marquardt opened the June 30, 2006, seminar featuring U.S. News & World Report journalist and renowned media trainer Eduardo Cué, at the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE), in Malabo. In his speech, Ambassador Marquardt noted that “the vitality of a modern society is judged by the plurality of its media. A vibrant media is a sign of an open society.” (Full text)
The conference, part of the ARS Paris Speaker Program, brought together the media, ASOPGE press association members, professors, students and assorted professionals interested in the role of the media and the issue’s relevance to the future of Equatorial Guinea. Journalist Eduardo Cue outlined the ways in which the media “allows society to view itself in the mirror” and creates a direct link to the well-being of society. Cue covered in his presentation challenges particular to the media, the importance of ethics and responsibility in exercising the profession, and the need for journalists to obtain information directly from a variety of sources.
